The ones that stand out.... I don't think it's any surprise for people who generally know me that I do enjoy watching anime. I was brought up in a generation when animation was dominating the scene and when anime, was beginning to become part of the norm of viewing pleasure in the west. This is evident with shows such as Pokemon for example which stemmed across the different artistic mediums of being a manga which turned into a show and became a gaming franchise that is still going on for 20 years now, which is kind of staggering to think about. Necessary sacrifice... Hey everyone, so basically I know normally this would be Post where I would either review or film/anime or talk about specific film news that appealed to me personally, but due to important circumstances and time I have left of Uni, I think it's time to let you know, very briefly, what you should expect to see and not see from this Blog in the coming weeks and months. A lot of potential that sadly falls flat on its face... It's not really surprising to state firstly that anime and video games over the years, whether it is within a Japanese animated film or T.V. show, that both entertainment mediums very much work in conjunction with each other. The obvious examples I have mentioned in the past, such as the Final Fantasy games being adapted into films in the forms of The Spirits Within and Advent Children and Pokemon becoming a transcending Nintendo product, are a perfect example of this and while in the past, these two mediums were considered to be something for the 'geek' demographic, I think it's fair to say now that we do live in an age where Japanese anime and video games are part of the 'norm' of peoples lives thanks to works such as Hayao Miyazaki and popular video games like Super Mario Bros. that appeal to all ages. Goin' Up?! While understandably, it is the likes of the British film directors of Danny Boyle, Christopher Nolan and Ridley Scott that take up the lime-light in the media aspect of things, it would be criminal to not forget the lesser-known British directors who create pieces of art in their own image that are worth taking a look at. One director, in particular, that fits this model of thinking is Ben Wheatley who has been responsible for making such works as Sightseers  (2012) and A Field in England (2013). There's no denying that in recent times, there has been some hefty discussion over the saturation of Superhero films in the current industry and how, regularly, each year, the numbers of Superhero films seems to be getting bigger and bigger. I mean, in fairness to the Studios that do produce and distribute the Superhero films, you can't blame them since it's the headline genre that makes the most money these days. While down the road of this year we are going to get the 'main' Superhero films of the likes of Batman V. Lack of story for such a good idea... Being that in this current state that I'm someone who is researching upon Japanese animation for a dissertation, it's no surprise really to learn that Japanese animation and video games are entertainment and artistic platforms that coalesce with each other. While a more subtle example of this can be see in Hayao Miyazaki's Castle in the Sky with magic crystals and floating cities resembling that of the 90's Final Fantasy video games, another more well-known platform would be that of Pokemon  which is a pure example of being a successful and morphed product which has spawned not just endless titles of films and games, but also with it's ever-popular merchandising of toys and playing cards. Sparks of new and old... I don't think there's any questioning really that along with some of the other great Sci-Fi film epics, such as Metropolis , 2001: A Space Odyssey , Alien/Aliens and many many more films of this ilk, Star Wars is a futuristic and adventure filled series that everyone in this day and age, can connect with in any way shape or form. Along with my early upbringing of generally watching films such as with the Disney animations and Peter Jackson's Lord of the Rings series of films, Star Wars, in particular Episode IV: A New Hope , was one of the first films that I cherished and loved watching over, and over again.
